THE PERFORMANCE OF THE SEASON – WAGNER’S LOHENGRIN IN OSTRAVA

Music director of the opera of the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre in Ostrava, conductor Robert Jindra, is probably the biggest fan of Richard Wagner in Bohemia. He can talk about him so passionately and enthusiastically that he would manage to persuade even the most convinced dissenter of the composer from Bayreuth.

Anna Karenina

Modern retellings of classic literature are frequent in the work of Daniel Špinar, one of the prominent Czech directors of the younger generation. In the 2011/2012 season, he started to collaborate with the Reduta Theatre in Brno – first with a new staging of Valmont, Špinar's own older stage adaptation of the famous epistolary novel by Chonderlos de Laclos, narrowed to three main characters: Valmont, marquise de Merteuil and madame Tourvel, then with Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy.

It is in many was a follow-up of their successful (somewhat marthaleresque) staging of Patrik Ouředník's famed novel Europeana, featuring mostly the same cast as well as a stage design by one of Mikulášek's frequent collaborators, scenographer Marek Cpin.

The Oresteia

The City Theatre (Městské divadlo) in Zlín is decidedly one of the better regional theaters in the country, still it does not manage to draw large attention every year. In the 2011/12 season, two of the theatre's productions were especially praised: a chamber staging of Enquist's Blanche and Marie by the young director Anna Petrželková was one of the most acclaimed productions at the Theatre European Regions festival in Hradec Králové, and an extraordinary staging of The Oresteia by Jan Antonín Pitínský was one of the most anticipated events of the season.

CZECH DANCE - Reviews

Amerikana III - The National Theatre in Prague has continued its loose series of programmes comprised of the works of American choreographers and under the title Amerikana III staged works by George Balanchine, William Forsythe and Jerome Robbins. The Broken Seal - They say that ‘talent is speed’. Someone who is genuinely talented is obsessed with creating, working, unhesitating, and unable to stop. The speed with which Lenka Vagnerová tossed one choreographed piece after another at us last year is evidence of a thunderous talent.
