Eva

The Czech opera EVA by Josef Bohuslav Foerster is based on drama Gazdina roba by Gabriela Preissova. Foerster started composing in 1895 and the piece was premiered in 1899 in The National Theatre Praque. Since then Eva had been a stable repertoir piece of Czech opera houses
until the second half of 20th century when it was suddenly left out. The latest performance of the opera was premiered in 1981 in Praque.
The story is very dramatic and tells us about a destitute girl who is in love with a rich man. They cannot be together, therefore she is getting married another man. In the marrieg she loses her child and finally commits a suicide. The main role of Eva is written for a dramatic soprano, her lover Manek Mešjaný is composed for a dramatic tenore and her husband for a baritone. Liberec's performance is distinguished by extraodinary singers and actors as well as exact conducting of the individual characters, and last but not least by excellently prepared orchestra.
