The Czech Republic has a dense network of permanent repertory theatres. Often these theatres are home to more than one company, and most of them fall under the administration of the municipal entities. Like in other Central European countries, this network developed through the efforts of prosperous (German and Czech) urban elites, out of the boom in associational activities, through socialist cultural policy, and out of the changes in public administration after 1989.
