Jan Dvořák´s Jubilee Birthday Celebrations - N. Malíková
Famous Czech puppeteer Jan Dvořák celebrated his 80th birthday on August 14, 2005. Dvořák continues to remain active in theatre, and has recently written his memoirs reminiscing about his relationships his fellow workers and friends, such as Matěj Kopecký (“Matěj, Máťa, Matýsek”). Dvořák can also be found at the roots of many famous theatre productions in the field of modern Czech puppetry. When Josef Skupa was still alive, Dvořák was one of the members of the Spejbl and Hurvínek Theatre and was one of the initiators of the young group, Salamandr in this theatre. He later became director of the legendary DRAK Theatre, where he later brought director Josef Krofta to the team.

Dvořák is also known as a talent seeker and an uncompromisingly devoted critic. Congratulations from puppeteers were sent to Hradec Králové, where Jan Dvořák lives and closely follows all accomplishments (and failures) of contemporary Czech puppet theatre. The Club of Friends of the Jesličky Theatre in Hradec Králové released a three-CD recording of Dvořák´s narration and songs entitled “When I Wandered, the Music Played” (“Když jsem vandroval, muzika hrála”).
