2005 will be a crucial year for determining the next multi-annual EU budget and funding for the new cultural framework programme - the successor to Culture 2000. Now is our opportunity to influence the programme's budget, which will be fixed for the coming seven years (2007 - 2013).
Currently the programme amounts to roughly 7 cents per citizen per year - a truly minuscule figure. The new funding proposal for Culture 2007 is 408 million euros over 7 years, which is roughly equivalent to 13 cents per EU citizen per year. This would be an insufficient increase.
Together with the European Forum for the Arts and Heritage (EFAH), the ECF is launching the '70 cents for culture campaign' to boost the resources which the EU makes available for culture. At a cost of just 70 cents per citizen per year, the 2007 cultural programme would have a more realistic budget of 315 million euros. The ECF and EFAH support the growing efforts of members of the European Parliament to achieve such a budget.
The campaign was officially launched on 15 March 2005 at the European Parliament in Brussels, together with artists, representatives from the European Institutions, business community and media world.
